"Community Weather Reporting with Virtual Earth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-11 10:17:29

has just launched a new beta community site called that let’s you report storms in your area. This is an interesting approach to social networking with weather on a micro-local scale. The site built with and a interface allows you to view in climate weather around the world but even better it allows you to report weather happenings wherever you are. You can register for free and login to report conditions anywhere you can click on a Virtual Earth map… which is anywhere in the world. The site is very straightforward. If you see an icon on the map you can click it to see what the event is in that respective location. There’s a helpful navigation bar with symbology hidden in the “View Storm Reports” tab. Clicking any of the symbols will filter the map turning off (or on) any of the weather types – Tornado. Wind. Ice Accumulation. Storm Accumulation. Fire. Hail. Flooding. Rain Accumulation. Precipitation Change. Cluster of Events (sounds exciting!) or Other. I’m sure “Other” is reserved for the San Diego weather person to say. “70 degrees and perfect,” so they feel like they can contribute to the community. Kidding – it’s all sour grapes. Additionally you can narrow your weather search by filtering on the date. This means you can see whether alerts that are happening today or go back and see the history of weather for any given day. What was the weather like in Seattle today? I wouldn’t know since I was in the office from 7:30AM – 8PM and I don’t have windows. I could always check the site to see anything exciting happened. That’s just depressing – dark on the way to work dark on the way home. Love Seattle though. To report an event go to and simply right click anywhere on the map then click the “Report Event” button the pops up. Enter the date the time and the type of event (as listed above). Now depending on the type of event you select you could provide some additional information such as with Wind – is it windy enough to knock down some branches or are we seeing building damage; or. Hail – is it the size of a pea penny quarter ping pong ball all the way up to softball (4.50 inches)… good lord! Where does that happen? Where do you head for cover?!? Additionally you can upload a picture or video with your report (top photos and videos are also browse-able in the navigation). Click submit and your event is instantly planted onto the site for the world to see. The site is built in a social aspect so with your profile you can fill in your location information upload an avatar discuss weather in their forums generally share weather information with people or just talk weather. Here’s a great introduction to meet someone on this site. “So how’s the weather?”

"Natural Hazards: Flood: Flooding in India and Bangladesh" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-14 01:59:07

India’s Brahmaputra River was already flooded in early August (bottom image) but those floods turned out to be small compared to the floods that hit the river in early September (top). The river flooded for the third time in 2007 when monsoon rain pounded northeastern India. Bhutan and Bangladesh in September reported the on September 11. As these images illustrate the September floods were the beat of the year forcing the Indian government to evacuate some 800,000 populate from the banks of the river. An additional 500,000 populate were evacuated downstream in Bangladesh. The floods damaged crops that had been replanted after the August floods said the BBC. The discuss Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer () on NASA’s satellite captured these images of the swollen river. Both images were made with a combination of infrared and visible lighten which makes wet be black or dark color. Plant-covered land is bright color and clouds are turquoise and white. In the top visualise taken on September 12 the Brahmaputra is more than 25 kilometers wide in places. The braided channels of the river disappeared as wet levels rose enough to amalgamate the channels into a hit wide blue ribbon. Tributaries flowing in from the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan are also swollen. The water is a dusty blue color compared to the dark color color seen in early August. The transport shade of blue indicates that the wet is thick with deposit a common write of recent flooding. MODIS captured the lower visualise on August 5. 2007 during the year’s back up round of flooding on the Brahmaputra. The river is wider than it had been during the but it is much smaller than it would become a month later.

"New Google Maps Moon Update" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 20:41:00

Google has posted a new modify to their Google Maps version of "explore idle" ( at their LatLong blog). This was done in tangent with the new. The new version includes new high resolution imagery details on the Apollo missions to the moon and includes a "Charts" overlay which show detailed terrain-relief maps of the mission areas in alter. If you move on the furnish you get placemarks with photos and change surface tracks of the lunar rover paths. And best of all they have StreetView-type panoramas you can pan around and zoom in on! What I don't see yet is a explore Earth file with all this data. Where is it?? (According to the I found: "Not yet but we're working on it!") One other little thing - It used to be when you zoomed in all the way on explore Moon - it would show the moon was made of cease. Not any more... Anyway check it all at Google Maps' . Here's what it looks desire: I know I am probably not in the right place but regards the disappearence of Steve Fossett; Has anyone considered that he may have gone into restricted air lay and been shot drink? I know this is very X-Files and out there someplace but is it possible?

One of their goals is to expose some of their library of map related data to the command public. VE has a simple javascript API that wraps the 3D hold back allowing them to furnish 3D data visualization in their own apps which could be one of the reasons for their choice in platforms.

"Virtual Earth Adopted by US Environmental Protection Agency" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 08:36:04

Microsoft today announced an agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency to license the Virtual Earth platform to cater "mission critical" applications. This includes external customer-facing applications as well as internal line-of-business applications. I have joined Pat Garvey manager of the Facility Registry System at the EPA on a few touch calls today and was impressed by his enthusiasm and excitement over the adoption of Virtual Earth by the EPA. (He made my job a lot easier!) Pat cited several reasons for the EPA's selection of Virtual Earth over other mapping offerings: accurate geocoding the high resolution aerial imagery the ability to increase existing ESRI investments so that their programs could better serve their customers and furnish end customers an immersive experience the web function copy and the rapid development measure. Pat indicated that internal applications are already in development and he expects public facing applications to be live within the next 4-6 weeks. Pat also reported that he found the cost for a Virtual Earth enterprise authorise compelling. "We wanted to get our feet wet with the technology without spending a fortune." Pat tells this story much better than I can. I ordain follow with links to the stories resulting from these calls.

"New Digital Globe Imagery for Steve Fossett Search" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-05 13:03:41

New imagery is available to help examine for Steve Fossett and it comes from DigitalGlobe (the biggest supplier of satellite imagery in explore Earth). This new imagery is to the south-east of the from GeoEye. The imagery available for loading in Google Earth has been posted at. You can use the Amazon site to search or you can just look with explore Earth. I've created a new that lets you look at both sets of imagery. The network cerebrate includes red outlines around each set of imagery so people don't accidentally search beyond the new imagery. If you go outside the borders you are looking at the base Google Earth imagery - which was taken desire before Steve Fossett went missing. NOTE: I tried asking Google about this previously reported imagery from. But. explore is not commenting on their involvement. I called DigitalGlobe today and they told me they had given this imagery to explore but had not heard anything as of early this morning. Obviously somebody processed the imagery and turned it over to the Amazon Mechanical Turk people. The DigitalGlobe photography available in the communicate link is better aligned with the locate imagery. So it makes it easier to analyse before and after. Well done stamp et al-don't know whether this was due to the 'collective complain' going on the forum or whether it was just a measure delay problem in collating and obtaining the data from other sources. Anyway-good news we can all now continue with our assistance and hopefully come to a successful conclusion Don't experience if this is possible but one assumes that this area has already been swept by the SAR teams. It would be extremely useful if they could upload (or make available) all the sites they have looked at so far so that we can quickly exclude these from our deliberations. Don't know if this is possible but one assumes that this area has already been swept by the SAR teams. It would be extremely useful if they could upload (or make available) all the sites they have looked at so far so that we can quickly do away with these from our deliberations. I tried to sign-up at the Amazon comprehend and couldn't. It occured to me that Mechanical Turk might be taking advantage of this infortunate situation just to make a buck (or get new customers). It would be much simplier if they would just say "here's the visualise here's our email have at it!". acclaim to your arouse in finding Steve. If you are looking for locations on the Digital Globe imagery that go from the "Turk" it designed to spread us out and alter us be systematically. I'm surprised that if you are looking at the same instructions that I see (on stevefossett com) that you aren't reporting coordinates in decimal degrees (rather than dms or decimal minutes or whatever). Let's be consistent so we don't have to do extra conversions and alter mistakes! Also send the "points of arouse" approve to the Turk so that the examine crews can analyse them out. At 37.9984 -118.426 I found what might be a fuselage at the end of a straight line path cut thru the rub near the top of a hill. Off to either side of the skid path looks like what might be wing struts. I had been given a HIT about a 1/4 mile NE of here. I replied to that HIT so I wish the SAR folks ordain actually construe it and look at it rather than just pass over it since no one else probably responded to that HIT. I meant shouldn't Turk be the way it was the new SAT visualise in the cover then compare to old in GE? It's now backwards I believe the old imagery is in TURK and you have to be at every one in GE instead of magnifying the browser to 190% for example? After playing with My Places and shuffling folders etc. Search area is very fuzzy. As GE goes to the DG area two files are not found: 00 kmz and 02 kmz. Red Borders are gone and second area - desire rectagular one SE of main area - is also gone. What undergo I done? Looks to be a cut drink in 38°17'18.16"N. 119°15'13.79"W and another (slightly less plane shaped) one change state by at 38°17'22.65"N. 119°15'11.49"W. Both spots appear to be on a dry lake bed (which is flooded in the old data) so perhaps Fossett set down to investigate the terrain and for some reason was unable to take off again. I am sure you all undergo already figured this out but as a suggestion it helps to turn the image by using the compass rose on GE untill the visualise is rightside up. I do this by rotating the visualise untill the shadows are directly below (toward the bottom of the check) the trees or buildings and it helps to better discriminate between terrain and man made objects. I have been feverishly working on the case of Steve Fossett's disappearance and have go up with an area that I undergo defined just east of the original search area and just west of the newly defined examine area. I have a saved explore Earth visualise with displace pins that include my logic for putting the area just in between the other areas. I used both Google Earth and Flight Simulator Ten (FSX) to go up with my findings and I'm convinced that Steve may undergo actually been heading for either R-4811 or Alkali Lake after he ran into affect (based on the camper's comments). Please email directly if you would like a write of the image I've defined that include my reasons why I evaluate he can be found where I've indicated. I undergo been re-checking all coord posted also have received numerous emails from individuals for rechecks. Any coord that are posted that have ANY determine for advance research I will repost findings and pass on to my communicate at the search dominate post. Stabbing at thin air here. I came across this in his flight-path:38.517684,-118.874962 Also these were on the Amazon Turk. I'm 95% sure they are on the old imagery but they sure as heck be desire planes.38.464000,-118.82380438.457397,-119.023084 authorise with hundreds if not thousands of eyes looking for him (in the air fasten via air imagery) wouldn't it be possible that because it was such a nice day that he might undergo gone off the "projected path" and act a go about path? I can't help but think everyone is so concentrated on looking "inside the box" that he may be right outside it. He's an adventurer/explorer; wouldn't that alter sense? That said... I found something that looks like wreckage of some sort that slid drink part of a mountain at:39 26 00 59 N and 120 02 55 66 W Greetings from Texas! If you would desire to see a plane in an inappropriate displace... I evaluate I might have open the needle in the hay lade! I used Google Earth instead of Turk. At first I found what looks like a plane on Paoha Island Coordinates 38°00'55.50"N. 119°01'53.39"W. You can copy and attach then hurry in real tight. You ordain see a "plus" or 4 rt angles or possibly a plane on arrive about 2 plane lengths from the North shore. It is hard to tell if it is a cut. I was pretty excited about that but then God in all his mercy.. well check it out for yourselves and let me know what you evaluate. I believe there is no challenge....... June Lake submerged plane Coordinates.... 37°47'28.04"N. 119°04'04.66"W..... D Dearinger: June Lake: It is a plane but it could also be a reflexion from a flying one?! That's why someone should set up a webpage where all findings are collected structured and commented... Everyone is posting coordinates but there is no feedback at all. What do you think? Does this make sense or is there alreay a page I don't know I have a a good suggestion and i hope u will pass it on. A sattelite visualise for mining purposes only can be selectively.

"EPA chooses Virtual Earth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-02 08:22:39

The Environmental Protection Agency in the U. S.  has a large number of geospacial apps for things such as oil spills land water quality etc. Today that they’ll be using Virtual Earth as the platform for these applications.  The reasons for choosing Virtual Earth over explore Earth weren’t clear but two things stuck out:  ”Virtual Earth is the only existing platform that offers developers and end users the ability to work with and believe air aerial oblique and 3-D imagery of the Earth.” – Is the observe’s Eye view that important for something desire this? “Before we selected Microsoft’s Web-based Virtual Earth the EPA relied on more expensive and cumbersome desktop applications” — That almost sounds desire a shot at Google Earth but I don’t evaluate it is. I’m still not sure why they chose VE over GE but it seems that for this type of application either platform would do the job.  It might just be a matter of preference rather than a specific need that was filled but I’d be curious to know for sure. The GIS world is gaga over explore Earth. Yes it’s cool but most of the real world (business/government) don’t be a heavy desktop application to do simple mapping applications. In my undergo explore is not setup to do business. Tried contacting them and their people were unresponsive and didn’t experience their product. regardign why EPA chose to go with the VE paltform - I don’t know for sure but as i said on my communicate today (virtualearth spaces live com) I guess it might be due to having an API for 3D in a web browser just a anticipate - each organization is different and considers a lot of factors when choosing their dev tools and platform - give options licensing languages supported runtime environments etc… Joe - I accept that GE is a heavy desktop app but VE is a rather heavy web app. Still if you’re in a Windows-only environment. VE is probably an easier way to go. The biggest downside is that you can’t run 3D on Mac/Linux. Steve - Also a good inform about the browser. That’s a big shortcoming of GE/Gmaps - no 3D in the browser (without crazy plug-ins). VE does it out of the box. You also make good points about give licensing etc. I’d be curious to know if that was a calculate and if so how.
